What We Do

A 911 professional takes emergency and non-emergency calls from the public and then dispatches law enforcement, fire, or emergency medical units as appropriate. Telecommunicators are certified in medical and fire protocols and provide lifesaving instructions to callers. Training Program

SJCCA’s training program is an intensive, months-long certification process. This training includes classroom and on-the-job training, plus time to gain practical experience. During your initial year, you’ll receive a national Public Safety Telecommunicator certificate, become a certified Emergency Medical and Fire Dispatcher, and attend the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy in Santa Fe for your state certification.

Make an informed decision

The 911 profession is a challenging career, and we want you to make the best decision for you. After submitting your application and passing a certified typing test, you can ride along with an SJCCA dispatcher. You will hear live 911 calls and radio traffic during the ride-along with emergency personnel. Our professional team members can answer any questions you might have about a career in 911. Position Job Description Salary Schedule
Public Safety Telecommunicator SJCCA professionals stay calm in tense situations and demonstrate the capacity to keep callers focused and on the line while information is gathered. At SJCCA, we strive for excellence in every aspect of our career and continually train to the highest level. Our team members support each other so the entire team can successfully resolve emergencies. 911 professionals are impartial and openly receive all information to be dispersed to the correct agencies. SJCCA proudly serves San Juan County every day through training, teamwork, and dedicated leadership. The current starting rate for a new 911 Dispatcher at SJCCA is $22.59 an hour. Because this position works 24 hours every day, there are ample opportunities for overtime. We have a competitive pay plan with annual step increases. There are also promotion and leadership development opportunities as your career evolves. Emergencies can happen at any time, so there must be 911 telecommunicators on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. SJCCA employees can work anywhere from 8-hour to 12-hour shifts, along with overtime opportunities. Shifts can depend on staffing levels, employee availability, and season. Currently, employees work at least 40 hours a week with up to 8 hours of overtime. The high need for 911 professionals and the 24-hour needed coverage will ensure there will always be a schedule to fit you.

There are a variety of shifts available because this job is up and running 365 days a year.
